Two very very good books I recommend all the time are "Logical Chess Move by Move" by Irving Chernev and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess" by Patrick Wolff. In Chernev's book he examines about 25 instructive games and gives explanations after EVERY MOVE to tell you why it's good or bad. Yes, it can get a little repetitive after you read that e4 is the best opening move for the 11th time, but he really tries to sink good principles into your brain. Wolff's book is so replete with diagrams that you almost don't need a chess board to read it. He heavily concentrates on tactics, strategy, and endgame and gives numerous examples and quizzes throughout the book. Aside from opening principles, he is pretty light on openings, which is good. Beginners should study just about anything before openings because your opponent is likely to depart from the "book" opening by move 3, and then where are you?

Aside from these books, you should spend time every day doing tactics puzzles. You can do a limited number on chess.com for free, but chesstempo.com has no limit on just tactics. Also, go to Puzzles>Drills here and do a number of simple checkmate drills and work your way up. You can do them over and over until you get them right.

Don't ignore the value of playing the computer opponents here on chess.com. There are players for every level, and you can start out with players at around 250 and play them until you beat them, and then move up. No time controls, no pressure, no head-banging humiliation when you lose. Just enjoyable play.

Finally, sit back with your favorite beverage, maybe a snack, and play over dozens and scores and hundreds of master games. You can find thousands of brilliant games here or on chessgames.com. You can choose short knockouts, prolonged contests, whatever you want. I'd start with the games of Paul Morphy--one of the clearest and most brilliant players ever to touch a chess piece.

If you don't improve after implementing my advice, then perhaps chess just isn't your game. Try Chutes and Ladders. (Kidding). Have fun, and good luck.

“A really good player”

He’s 900.

Just learn basic opening principles and do tactics puzzles frequently and wait for him to hang a queen.

Perhaps learn some very basic endgame and checkmate patterns.

Congratulations, you can now destroy 900 rated players.

Coming from someone who was stuck at that rating range for a while, 900’s blunder every game.

They are just that bad.

One time I hung a Queen, leaving it on a diagonal that an enemy bishop occupied.

The opponent thought for twenty seconds before ignoring the Queen.

I then proceeded to sigh in relief and move my Queen to “safety” one square over on the same diagonal.

He then proceeded to take my Queen after another long thought.

I then proceeded to win after he blundered away his Queen a few moves later and then hung mate in one.

This is how laughably bad these players are.
