♟️ Beginner Lesson 3: Basic Checkmates
Hi everyone 👋, welcome back to the beginner series!
In Lesson 1 we learned the basics, in Lesson 2 we studied opening principles.
Now it’s time for something every player must know — how to checkmate!
🏆 3 Essential Checkmates Every Beginner Should Master
King + Queen vs King
Use your queen to push the opponent’s king to the edge. Then bring your king closer. Deliver checkmate with queen + king together.
King + Rook vs King
Similar idea, but with the rook. Use the rook to cut off ranks/files, push the king to the edge, then bring your king in.
Two Rooks vs King
This one is the easiest. The rooks work like a “ladder” — keep pushing the king back step by step until checkmate. ❌ Common Mistakes Trying to checkmate without bringing your own king in. Giving endless checks instead of pushing the opponent’s king to the edge. 🎯 Beginner Challenge Practice each checkmate once against the computer on “Custom Setup.” Time yourself — can you do each mate in under 1 minute? Try them in real games if you get the chance!
I mean when you’re practicing basic checkmates (like King + Queen vs King), your goal is to slowly push the enemy king to the edge of the board. Once the king is trapped on the last rank or file, you can bring your own king closer and give checkmate.
