1. Have a basic opening plan, use it consistently, and write it down and revised it as needed (both white and black). This will improve your depth as you learn from mistakes.
2. Understand basic principles: control the center, develop minor pieces, castle early, and pieces should protect one another.
3. Know basic checkmates (queen, two rooks, one rook).
4. Look for Checks, Captures, and Threats on every move. Be less impulsive.
5. Practice tactics/puzzles a little each day and rework all of the ones you miss. This will have a major impact over time.
