How to I sacrifice?

relatively new player here! I've been learning a lot over the last few weeks. I enjoy daily games but would like to also improve my rapid game. I've also been doing tactics. the question is how can I force myself to see a sacrifice that would help lead to a win? it has been so reinforced from the beginning to watch undefended pieces and to avoid losing material for no see able reason. I've noticed in my tactics training that I have a lot of trouble seeing a sacrifice that would lead to a win. it becomes even harder when the piece in question is a queen. any tips?

You have only done 29 puzzles.  Things will start getting easier to see after you have done 1000. Have patience.

I use another app for tactics and lessons. chess king app with the "learn chess: from beginner to club player course" amongst other courses they offer too! I prefer couple euro one time payment than a subscription:p

you need to solve the same problem you have tried before for pattern recognition improvement. get chess tactics for champion book so you can repeat solving the problems. this book also organizes tactical motifs by theme.

You have to be able to identify weaknesses that you can exploit. If you sacrifice without recognition of such things, you will lose. As you improve, you will get better at spotting the weaknesses. The problem is that your opponents will get better at defending them.

Thanks for the tips!

Positional sacrifices are rare, but take great understanding of the position. Most sacrifices (especially what comes to mind when someone mentions a sacrifice) is a tactical sacrifice rooted in calculation. Think of it like an investment. Would you invest, say a Knight, to win the opponent's Queen later on? Sure! How do we see if the "investment" is a good one or not? Simply by being able to see it further - you will naturally see opportune chances for sound sacrifices when you are able to calculate correctly deep enough.

Similar to what others have suggested, just learn pattern recognition, play tactics, study chess games etc. Study of games from Tal, Alekhine, Kasparov etc. is a bonus because they are known for their attacking play. Find some places where they sacrifice material and then try to figure out why they can play that. If you are still unsure (after calculating yourself, or even checking with a computer), then feel free to message me directly or post a forum about that position: I'm sure many people will be glad to point you in the right direction. happy.png

Thanks for the super detailed reply!

as above and my 2c

Usually a sac would take place near end game, if you block oppo attack and or defense with a potential target piece, or open a line or links two attackers, you have done this because calculation (as above) and end game is visualised,  So puzzles and end game studies, then you will be short in openings, then tactics and the bloody thing goes round and round.  Too late for us all, but warn the kids Chess is addictive, hard and never bloody ends!
