I don't understand how to do checkmates on any game - please give examples so I understand.

In that first position, one needs to be very talented to find the only move that stalemates Black (Kf6).

Check out "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess".  I know of no better way for a beginner to learn typical checkmating patterns.  Super easy read.
