I don't understand how to do checkmates on any game - please give examples so I understand.

I don't understand when a move that could kill the king is a checkmate or isn't. It's super confusing and would love tips.

In that first position, best not to do it set it up that way, you might accidentally stalemate

In that first position, one needs to be very talented to find the only move that stalemates Black (Kf6).

Check out "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess".  I know of no better way for a beginner to learn typical checkmating patterns.  Super easy read.

In the first position, it is worth observing that Qb8 also checkmates.
