I May Not Be Winning Much ... But I'm Surviving Longer. Progress....

Or the kids' video games.😉

Ha!!!  Yeah.  That!

Played 5 games this afternoon.  Won 2.  (That's actually better than my stats would suggest.)

Doing the puzzles has been helpful.  Suddenly, in that last game I saw three moves which were mimics of some of the puzzles.

They worked!

Good for you and the grandchildren! Keep it up, you’re making memories my friend. Oh how is wish i had memories like the ones you’re creating with my GrandFather.

I’ve been teaching the 14 year old neighbor kid to play Chess for the past month, and today he won 4 games in a row. I’m very proud of him!

And we're proud of YOU, Coach!

Next time I'm home, I wonder if I can get my nephews in on playing. The older might be up for it, but the younger has a bad habit of either trying (poorly) to cheat or suddenly "gets bored" if he's not winning. Trying to cure him of both and I'm hoping he'll grow out of it; it's a habit he doesn't need to keep into his pre-teen years. happy.png

I think I was winning this game. (Noahstarr's connection must have broken just as we were moving into the end game....)

The analysis engine is telling me "better moves" existed for me ... but I don't agree with some of what the engine is telling me. Maybe someone more knowledgeable (which is nearly everybody on these forums) can explain this to me?

I learned a lot (I think!) from John Bartholomew's videos on youtube. In one he discusses being smart about trades.  Don't use higher valued pieces to capture / trade with lower valued pieces ... you don't ALWAYS need to go for a trade, etc. I thought these concepts were really helping me get a better grasp on improving.  Especially with trying to have fewer instances of undefended pieces.

I clearly missed an opportunity to capture his Q with my B ... but many moves later I got her with that same Bishop.

I was planning to bring my e1 Rook to the 3rd rank and add him to the attack on his King (maybe at g3 if I captured his Knight with my Queen first(?).

Suddenly I was the "winner" ... but I wish we'd really finished.

I was well into a game vs IsaiahG. Both our clocks were flashing ... for a very long time.

Next thing I saw I had "lost".

What happened?

It’s a week shy of two months playing chess. I’ve completed 86 games. I’m really challenged by this crazy game.

Yesterday I played a long game against ivarunmenon .  (Again) the analysis engine still tells me "better moves" existed for me ... but I don't agree with some of what the engine is telling me.

11.  I moved bxc4. The engine says Nxc6 is the best move … essentially sacrificing my Knight to his b7 pawn. Why would I want to do that?
(Two move later I lost one of my forked Rooks, so I’m not claiming to be smarter than those who design the engine….)
15. Nf5, the engine was STILL saying I should have moved Nxc6 … trading Knights. (I thought trade which don’t advance my game are not a good idea…?
23. Ng4, engine says I should have taken his Knight (b4). In hindsight I really wish I had.  Those two knights really gave me fits. (But I wasn’t sure he would lay off my e2 Rook with his Rook, so I wanted my Knight to give him a reason to lay-off.)

ivarunmenon had connection problems and was auto-resigned.  (Too bad.  I was enjoying that battle.)

I would like that, ExploringWA. (Do you play 30 min or 15|10 games? I'm not comfortable with faster games ... and I lose my concentration in Daily games.)

There's actually no really good way to "beat magnus carleson in 30 days" kinda lessons, but there are scams. The best way would probably be experience. Try to move slower for a start. Analyze the whole board. Keep track of progress every month.

Plus, analyze a good opening for beginners like the Guicco Piano.

Yo,Popster.....You are definitely on the right track......Just keep staying with it and you will see things more clearly and enjoy the game more and more.....Btw,it's a good thing to re-watch the J.B. videos, since much of what he mentions gets lost at first, but becomes more clear as one keeps playing the game.

Good luck......

Now I have to get my rest, because I babysit my 3  and 8 year old grandkids tomorrow......Exhausting,but fun.
