I wish I could manually set my ELO down way lower than what it is.

My ELO doesn't match how I play chess at all. I don't see myself improving if I can only win if my opponent does a mistake and not by my own skill.

Lol your Elo is 500. How much lower do you want to get?!

Sred

If the opponent doesn't make mistakes, you can't win, even if you are Magnus Carlssen. At 500 rapid, the mistakes are generally more obvious, of course. If you were actually able to win regularly without the opponent making simple tactical mistakes, your rating would be 1500+.

At your level, that's how chess games are won.  Someone blunders and the opponent takes advantage.  Usually the next to last person to blunder wins.  It's just a stage folks go through.  Keep playing, maybe do a little studying and you'll get better.

Yes, but why not start beginners at an Elo of 100 or give them an option of lowering their Elo? Then they would be motivated to play to raise their Elo. When they are started at 800 they see that they are probably doomed to lose over and over and over.

Within a few games your elo will reflect your strength. That is a bit of discouraging start, you will loose your first games, but it won’t take long.

Just enjoy the game. Better games and elo will come eventually if you put the time and effort.

Keep losing and eventually you’ll start playing against people with lower ELO that you can beat.

Why would you like playing against people who are way weaker than you are?

Chess is a fight. Is there any pleasure to be derived from beating up somebody who's ability to defend themselves against you is woefully inadequate?

Or is a good scrap against an equally matched opponent more fun?

" I can only win if my opponent does a mistake and not by my own skill."

Playing sensible moves and not hanging your pieces is a skill--a crucial skill!

play slower games, i.e 30 minutes. you'll both be playing much better chess.
