Is it good idea?

(Repost from General section) As it is on the board, I’m beginner in chess, but I think white’s defense of king is better than black’s one. Am I wrong? If not, is it good idea to play b3 (or g3, b6, g6) with castle at the beginning of game?

It depends of the pieces. But the position with b3 (g3, b6, g6) is in general weaker unless you have a Bishop on b2 defending the weak squares a3 and c3.

here white is ahead slightly.  The reason is that a king behind 3 pawns on the 2nd/7th is vulnerable to the rook's checkmate -- the pawns block any escape.   Also white having moved one of the pawns is sort of a move ahead of black, but its unclear who's turn it is so that one is a maybe.   Black plays f5 and can pull his king out or defend the pawn with g6 if necessary, but that breaks the vulnerability to the back rank mate and lets the king move towards the center.  Honestly its not a realistic position, and its probably a draw.

Earlier in the game, opening up an escape square (look up 'luft' and chess) depends.  It can be a weakness, or it can save you later.  You have to look at the position.  I often open play a or h pawns: my preferred bishop positioning makes those both a retreat for the Bs and escape for the K, but this is part of a bigger picture.  Others will fianchetto the B, and that means push the middle pawn instead.  It just depends too much.  The a and h pawns are vulnerable to sacrifices that expose the king to attacks....  you have to be aware of this as well.
