Is it possible to reach 2000 ONLY by studying tactics?

You can even play tactics ( without calculating) by positional decision. For example,  I saw these positions before , I know I need to sacrifice a piece to destroy the king shelter( no need for wasting time in calculating tactics).

For example, I have seen tons of similar position, this is like where I should sacrifice a bishop to destroy king shelter.

Yes, it can be done, and I've seen it done.  There's a very wide range of playing styles at the 2000 level.  That being said, it's easier to get there by studying both tactics and positional play, and it harder if you learn something that isn't quite correct (which often arises from neglecting either tactical or positional aspects to the game).

Question  should be how long will it take!?

I recently asked my friend who has been playing chess since middle school. He is now 31 years old. He reached Candidate Master, 2270 FIDE rating - classic, but he did way more than just studying tactics. He is 2533 blitz on this website.

I believe the 10,000 hour rule applies at the 1900~2100 level. Whether you can go even further depends on your talents.

I know 2 people that made it to USCF Expert on tactics, and crazy openings like the halloween gambit.  They do very well when playing against anyone close to their rating.  But as soon as they have to play up in an Open section of a tournament?  They get crushed.

This reminds me of D.Zimbeck. He's a cool guy actually. He taught me the halloween.

Saad ali,1500 Is reachable but to maintain is an uphill task.

That's a great question. Perhaps OP should try his idea on Studying Tactics Only on Chess 960 and see how far he could get.

No.

Mostly because it's impossible to only learn tactics. When you play games you learn from your mistakes. If you get to 2000 you've played a lot of games... so you're going to know a lot of non-tactical things regardless of what you've studied from books.

Then be well rounded i.e. learn a little bit of everything. Studying only one thing is probably the least efficient way to improve.

king2queensside

As per above, with my 2c.

If you play social only there is little need to study openings, you will likely never reach 1500, but will enjoy some odd positions and have some fun.

To progress you need a balanced study plan, choose one or two openings and get to say 8 or 9 moves deep, switch to tactics, endgame and deeper strategy, then start again and go deeper, then start again and choose other openings and repeat and repeat...

There iare some short cuts, i.e. as per above, read some good books and then apply that learning, but there is no replacing the above if you want to be able to compete at 1800+.

I was told that a person did in fact go from a Class D over the board player to a Class A in 4 months and won $1,000 relying strictly upon tactical training. He wrote a book Rapid Chess Improvement. Michael de la maza

It was 1300 to 2100 in 3 years, not 4 months. And it's suspicious because

 - he had a PhD in electrical engineering from MIT and experience in programming computers to play chess.

 - His improvement did not slow as he neared 2200 as other quick improves did (like Nakamura).

 - His improvement has not been repeated by others trying his method.

 - Even though he won $10,000 (not $1,000) he quit chess immediately afterwards and wrote a non-book about it (It's a 1 page article expanded into a book, and the little advice in the book isn't even new:  solving puzzles helps you improve).

Hello,

In my opinion, chess has 4 main territories: openings, strategies, tactics and endgames. You should improve all these territories at the same time, that's how you could increase your level faster. Tactics is just one area (but of course, it is important), so beleive me, it is not enough to learn just tactics. At beginner level, it is also very important to analyse your games deeply and learn from your mistakes. You can do it with chess.com enginges but it is not enough. It can tell you if a move was good or bad, but can't explain why (and which is the good plan behind the moves). You need to do it with a stronger player or a coach. I am an official coach, who can help you with all these territories. If you are interested in working with me, please, check my profile and if my conditions are suitable for you, you can send me a private message.  Here, you can find some feedbacks about my coaching services: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-lessons/feedbacks-from-my-services I am looking forward to your message.

No, I would say only doing tactics won't get you to 2000. Part 2 of my Road to NM series addresses the topic of how to get to 2000, so I suggest checking that out if you're interested:

I agree with the comments of sheer will power by @Aizen89 and got to study all aspects by @KingKev52

I saw your video on how to get from not rated to 1700. I think I'll set the bar that high. I don't think I have what it takes to to National Master, haha. Thanks!

Road to National Master: unranked to 1700.

Thanks for the tips:

1- play an opening you're passionate about. One you can play thousands of games in and still enjoy it.

2- Play lots of online games, no blitz or bullets. 30 minute games.

3- Analyze your chess games afterwards without a chess engine.

4- Watch training videos. 2 or 3 players that inspire you and their lessons.

5- Put everything together.

Blitz actually does help as it helps you train tactically for up to 1400, however, you must play positionally to reach 1600-2000 USCF/Fide. Playing positionally means tactical opportunities will inevitably crop up

I am 1600+ but have basically no knowledge of positional or strategical play. help

10 minute blitz is good... on the other chess site it's rapid, though.
