I started playing the Caro kann recently as black and I want to know is it a good opening  for beginners?

I like the caro kann, I am 800 rated as well. I think it is a very easy and solid opening for beginners. I just played a 92.4 accuracy game with it.

Yes it is. And it is good all the way to GM level.

Just as good are French, Sicilian, 1… e5 and Scandinavian.

But if you feel comfortable playing the Caro-Kann, I recommend you stick with it and when you lose, try to learn from those losses and improve.

Yeah, right now I'm on a win streak using it so i think I'll stick with it for now

The Caro Khan is a good opening for someone under 1000. It can certainly be played at much higher levels of chess also. The pros certainly outweigh the cons for a player under 1000 rapid. The pros are easy development, you are not restricting your light squared bishop, has no positional weaknesses, and you don't need to know your lines really well (just following opening principles will be fine, and keeping an eye out for tactics and blunders will take you far). The main con is that player playing the white pieces can do pretty much whatever they want, and don't have to know what to do in this opening. This would be the opposite of comparable opening like the French Defense (which is much harder for beginners to play). Which the player playing white has to know what they are doing in almost all variations, although this goes the same for black in many cases. Gothamchess on Youtube has videos on the Caro Khan for beginners. Hope this helps.

Is the Caro only for e4? Would a player need a different defense for d4 and others?

Yes. Caro Kann is 1. e4 c6.

You can use 1… c6 against 1.d4 or 1.c4.

In both cases the game could well transpose into normal Caro-Kann variations or it might not.

Against 1.d4 it could turn into the Slav defense etc. but you are OK replying 1… c6 in any case to both d4 and c4 openings.

It is good if you know the lines and how to play it well.

Karpov played Caro Kann regularly. Then it can't be that bad.

Just play it do it with like normal opening principles stop asking random people they are not gm
just test it on unrated do it and if you don't understand use analysis board after game or something and if you don't like the position don't play it and if you do then do play it
simple as that right?

bingybeats

I don't like it

I play the Caro-Kann almost exclusively. It's good at all levels. Simpler to learn than most defenses against e4 as well in my opinion.

I have to recommend International Master Alex Banzea's youtube-channel for people interested in learning the Caro-Kann.

I have a book on Caro-Kann also, which I am studying, but well, the youtube channel is free and it is very instructive. Pretty much every move is explained and Banzea keeps playing very principled chess. So you learn the Caro-Kann and just general chess principles at the same time.

I strongly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn the Caro-Kann. Way more to the point than some other youtubers who are more into just making "fun" content or whatever...

Seems like that youtube channel and the book have helped me with my Caro-Kann. Just finished a game with 90+ accuracy playing the Caro-Kann... happy.png
