Must the intermediate square be open or just the destination?

I.E. The knight moves two squares in one direction and then one square over. Does the square that is two away have to be clear?

Yeah you can capture a piece. Just make sure you don’t get captured right back. Knights are the only pieces that can jump over pieces.
