Matchmaking in daily

In daily I am constantly getting matched with people 2-4x my ELO (400ish). How am I meant to progress when I am so heavily outgunned? Surely on a platform this large it can find someone +or-100?
Matchmaking in live chess is typically within 200 points of your rating. With Daily, you can seek your own challenges. Where exactly are you getting "matched?" Is it the "recommended matches" feature on the homepage? I don't think this has anything to do with rating, they just recommend chess players you've recently become friends with (as least to my knowledge; I don't play daily chess that much).
I have the opposite problem with it: I am about 1450 rated in Daily, and getting matched against literally beginners with rating of 400. Only rarely I can find an opponent who is at my level. Although I don't even take daily games seriously
