My Elo varies between 250 to 430 frequently. I develop my pieces in the opening very nicely. But in the middle game I make blunder frequently. After opening I can't decide which move should I play and my pawn play is very weak. My first target is to get to 1200 Elo. What to do? And also what book should I read as a beginner. I am trying to self improve.

Note: I can play and win against 1200 bot in chess.com with 1 or 2 take backs but struggling to play with real players.

I can only tell you what works for me, which is namely a limited repertoire with a very flexible approach. What do I mean by that? I mean pick a few openings and defenses, say just four or five, that cover the most common plays and responses. These should fit your own style, which may be very different from that of your chess heroes. Case in point. When I first started playing, Bobby Fischer had just won the 1972 world championship and I adored him, so of course I wanted to play the Sicilian. I lost with this for years before I finally realized the Caro was a better stepping stone to a playable middle game, at least for me. This is where the flexibility part comes in, because you can't often expect to play your standard openings "by the book" past about move five, at least not at the non-professional level. I had to learn to VARY EARLY from the book moves and just PLAY THE BOARD, not necessarily the theory. Things are not always nice and neat below the master level, but in a way that's a good thing because it forces us to learn on-the-fly adaptation. Experience, experience, experience. We can never get enough.

Some videos about general principles of chess openings and then mostly tactics, tactics and more tactics.

Try daily games. When opponent open, look for a video (Gotham chess or other) that covers that opening, make notes and apply to game. It’s slower but has helped me.

If you like, we can play an unrated live chess game or two sometime and I can give you some advice tailored to your game afterwards. happy.png

"Chess for tactics for champions" of Susan Polgar is a very nice tactics book. Then you can do casual tactics everyday here or on lichess. If you do 30-40 min of tactics everyday you'll become tactically sharper, you'll better see the board and you will blunder less. As a consequence your rating will grow.

If you are a beginner and want to improve at chess, I would recommend you to consider subscribing to YT channel Chess Vibes. It's an extremely useful channel especially for beginners like you.
