Not becoming discouraged

So I was playing the other night and figured I was losing....but then I won....I was surprised . Glad that I had not resigned when I felt that I had lost.

KeSetoKaiba

Yup congrats; comeback wins are part of the game happy.png

Even grandmasters sometimes slip or make great comebacks, but generally speaking, the higher the ratings than the less this happens. At the highest levels of play, the smallest margin of error is enough for them to capitalize on, but draws are also really likely because both sides are so tough to beat in a chess game grin.png

lol thanks, but of course it depends on the game. I've played and had many more than one mistake before myself grin.png

Capitalizing on smaller elements is something you get better at with time and practice though; having the confidence to convert can also be helped by studying key "theoretical endgames" as well as "theoretical checkmates." happy.png

I'm glad that you kept on playing and didn't resign!  Crazy things can happen in a  chess game.

I tell my beginner students to never resign.

At the 300 level, a comeback is always plausible. Never resign.

At higher levels, continuing play is just pedantic.

Yes, at 2000+ level.

Arwen2100

Thanks for the input. I am a beginner and really just starting to play with others. I guess continuing to play even though you think you are going to lose is a learning experience.

Yes, at 2000+ level.

Even the grandmaster level is full of dramatic comebacks. Once Magnus blundered a rook against a grandmaster opponent, but the position was very complicated, so he still won. And that was a slow game, not blitz!

Pauldrapier's comment is just nonsense.

AussieMatey

Well, Ar, wen you're losing don't throw it all away.

Wow really? Could you show the game? I always resign when I lose a pawn… I should stop.

Arwen2100

Yes you should keep playing. It is the only way to learn I think. A few times people have resigned on me when I have captured on of their pieces. Not sure why but I was surprised. I am a beginner player

Amateur hour is a better description.

ChampoftheBepoCamp

@KeSetoKaiba I saw you made some dubious pawn sacs... and the Engine didn't like it either but you got some mate afterwards angry.png... feels so dirty lol...

That feeling when your up 2 pawns and in a good position but somehow get checkmated after a while lol

I wasn't talking about being a rook down in a complicated position.

It's okay, just study some grandmaster games and you'll get a good idea when they believe the game is no longer worth their time.
