Why?
All it does is rob you of your true rating. And who cares if it’s lower the you’d like.
Would you like to have a rating that’s false, an illusion, a fraud just to placate your pride.
I’ll tell you right now. If you are motivated by ❌🤮P😵R🤥I☠️D🥺E❌ you’ll never reach your potential. No matter how high you get your score.

Till the year of 1998 (give or take) I only played friends and family. Always unrated. I think I didn’t know ratings existed. I enjoyed it a lot.

Now I almost always play online. And always rated. But sometimes I think that my rating, or more precise, the drop of my rating, spoils the fun a bit.

If you care about your rating too much and you'll start being protective. You will start playing in a comfort zone where everything is familiar and the same. You are safe there.

But you will hardly make any progress there.

Always play for learning, be brave, dont be scared to lose, try new things, read learn and try..

playing unrated games shows that you are afraid of losing.. get rid of this mentality.

knowledge is the real power.. not your rating.

@gdzen 👍

There are people I know that play unrated all the time and that is why I play it too.

Without doubts.

Thank you citizen.

Too bad you didn`t qualify. You could have been a good banana.

LeeEuler

I basically only play rated. But if I am playing against a friend who is either much worse or much better I will offer unrated so as to not skew points if there's a big upset

LeeEuler

Though I see your point about true rating, it's just a personal preference. Basically, a view the tail percentages as much more likely to happen then the compensation for winning

LeeEuler

Meant I. And to illustrate, if I lose to a 1000 say, I will lose 15 points, but if I win, I get 0 or 1

no, the banana union was too undignified for me, could you believe how they did things, they would lower the back door of the plane and tell the banana's to take a walk, of course I saw this all on tv in the comforts of my home, but still!

Do you have a banana TV? Or a banana phone?

Why  does the OP care so much about how other people--people he doesn't even know!--choose to play chess? Why does he think anyone on earth is interested in his opinions? Something not quite right with that guy

oh no banana standards are quite high, he's more like a nutcase if you will

Doctor Banana`s appointments would cost you 20$ per hour @chessduhcomASLUM so you are lucky to have this free doctor`s opinion.

I agree. Online ratings allow you to get competitive games and measure your progress. If someone is playing unrated games exclusively to preserve their rating, then they don’t deserve that rating.

Jake_Sweeper

Personally, I think all one's games here should be rated when you're a beginner. It will suck seeing that 1200 default drop as you lose games, but it will help give you an honest assessment of where you stand; not to mention that it will eventually start going back up as you start getting the basics down.

Kinda wish I could drop my rating to 800-900 range here as that's where I think I am after returning from years of not playing, but  I've yet to find that option if it exists.

Laskersnephew

Why this strange obsession with how people--people you don't even know!--chose to play? What possible business of yours could it be? There something kind of twisted about people who think they should tell other people how to play

elibus2020

For me, there is no motiviation without rating. It may be just a number, but it serves as solid proof for my improvement. If there is no reward for my efforts, I am not able to reach my full potential.
