This is just the case in the first few games you play. There is a system in place which will stabilise your rating when you have played more games and your own rating is more accurate.

Hi, just started playing online games on chess.com (30min games) and I'm really enjoying myself. One thing has surprised me though: the number of points you gain/lose after each game. Even when playing with somebody with a 10 or 20 point difference the number of points lost/gained is pretty high (usually 40+) Does that always happen or is it just for the few first games?
