Q+A for beginners(and everyone else)

Who would win if you played yourself?
"Playing yourself" is a way I encourage beginners to practice basic techniques such as checkmating a lone king with king and rook. It is hoped that the winning side will always win. By counting the number of moves needed, the beginner will be able to track progress toward mastering the technique.

I've experienced four different winners when playing myself: I, myself, me, and the funny-looking guy in the mirror.

What are some strategies for endgames and middlegames?
Try to checkmate.
But also, try not to be checkmated. Sometimes that's the hard part.
