What are some strategies for endgame?

Often times simplification is a common motif of winning an endgame, but this alone is not always best. The key is to have an understanding of the theoretical endgames and which ones are won, lost, or drawn. Then you simply have to assess how to transform this current position into an endgame favorable to you. For example: one theoretical endgame that is a must-know for any serious chess player is King + pawn vs King. Sometimes a draw and a win look similar to an untrained eye. Knowing many endgames well will help you know what your endgame goals should be.

I can relate. I am 1794 otb but I play like a 900 at blitz. I think this is because we are used to slow games so we just make many blunders when playing fast. In order to get better you should probably just play many practice blitz games and improve your tactical speed. Blitz is much harder for most people.

wollyhood

That's good to know. I thought it was just because I was unfamiliar with all chess patterns that I am so terrible at blitz.

In my last chess game my opponent was talking so much and so loud to the person sitting next to me. In the end I lost the game, it was because of my opponent. If I told on him I would feel like a tattletale. What should I do if the same case happens again?

wollyhood

Yes most games seem to be lost because of the opponent: )

Seriously though, could you get massively strong fingernails, and drum louder and louder on the table to drown out his distracting you? Creating some white noise for your sanity, that just happens to sound like the cavalry

Ear plugs? That could reduce more than half the noise

smartbryce

Thanks! I will try the earplugs. But it would take me a while to grow long fingernails though. And I would still hear my opponent.

What should you do if you are playing a chess game and you only have 1 minute left on the clock?

They are not supposed to be talking first of all. Is there not a td overseeing these games? If you are being distracted by noise, earplugs or noise canceling headphones are acceptable in most areas. If you are using these though you need a way to show that it isn't connected to any external device that you could use to cheat.

There wasn't. Actually  they even let parents watch their children while they were playing, which got a little weird when they were hovering over. But when a parents' phone rang...

wollyhood

yah that sounds pretty poor. I would write a polite letter to the chess association in charge of that area and let them know your concerns.

Thanks. The torny was pretty poor. The first place prize was only 25 bucks. I only went to the torny because the price to enter was pretty low, and they had some good players.

smartbryce

Also in the torny there was this big room where we would play chess, and in the same big room there was another part where you could talk, eat, and relax and wait for your next game (it was pretty loud). And the only thing separating the parts was just a cloth curtain.

Well ****, wrong thread, I apologize,  well I'll take the oportunity and ask something:

Controversial one, is it good for black to castle short in most french defense advance variations?
