In a puzzle, you can be either white or black.

Is there a way to know for sure in which direction the pawns are going ?

When you see a puzzle board, the row closest to you should have letters, and the leftmost column should have numbers. In chess terms, rows are called ranks and columns are called files. Black pawns move towards the 1st rank. White pawns move towards the 8th rank.

If you're doing puzzles in a book, white is always going up, black is always going down. In a puzzle on chess.com, you're always sitting on the side that you're playing. So your pawns are always going up.
