I posted about being 73 and ashamed of my low rating. Your replies helped! Especially Bas (Netherlands). I am still in a fog and still no real clue at all but have taken the advice “enjoy the game”. About 319 to 427 in last few games. Still hopeless, but recharged. I am pleasantly surest the level of civility in this group. Thank you💐

I am 63, started playing chess only recently. I lose all the time, but it is fun and a way to keep my brain working. I do as much puzzles as I can, seems to help a bit. So, deeholme-werner, just keep enjoying chess. Happy New Year!

an IM who is very well known in the chess world told me it is EXTREMELY difficult to get proficient in chess if you don't start when you are young. so just enjoy it for what it is.

Load of horse manure. Proficient is defined as skilled /competent. Certainly attainable for anyone at any age after a fair amount of practice and training. The key as always is getting started on the right foot, knowing how one learns best. An elderly age makes for an advantage in this regard as youngsters often enough think they already “know it all”.

I'm 84 and I'm headed down to your rating . . .

Currently I'm at 1447 going down . . .

I used to play blindfold games when I was 20 years old . . .

Was a "B" player in USCF . . .

I've taught hundreds of beginning players and even ran sanctioned tournaments . . .

@StormCentre3 & @pawnstar1957 - if you want to continue arguing and insulting each other over the meaning of the word proficient, please create your own forum thread and take it there.  No one here is interested.
