I am 63, started playing chess only recently. I lose all the time, but it is fun and a way to keep my brain working. I do as much puzzles as I can, seems to help a bit. So, deeholme-werner, just keep enjoying chess. Happy New Year!
an IM who is very well known in the chess world told me it is EXTREMELY difficult to get proficient in chess if you don't start when you are young. so just enjoy it for what it is.

Load of horse manure. Proficient is defined as skilled /competent. Certainly attainable for anyone at any age after a fair amount of practice and training. The key as always is getting started on the right foot, knowing how one learns best. An elderly age makes for an advantage in this regard as youngsters often enough think they already “know it all”.
