Thoughts as a beginner chess player-Open conversation

Pardon my free form thoughts but I'm excited to participate in these forums, I just found them and haven't been on forums since discord was introduced to me.

As a beginner player I can't help but lament how daunting the climb to 1200 proficiency in chess is, let alone the more impressive goals of 1600. On my fixture in the chess jungle I swing freely around 1000 sometimes peaking at 1100 and often shamefully dropping towards 800 on evenings when substance use and boredom overlap; When all else in love and life seems too challenging to enjoy in the moment-chess.com.

There is a peace in these woods.

In these arenas you merely need to lightly study both the Scotch opening and Sicilian defense to thrive in battle and rarely is a competitor actively studying lines introduced to our vibrant ecosystem. These blessed souls quickly reach out to tree limbs and rope vines that stretch from outside our nest of saplings, in to burrows of mighty oaks. Wherein I imagine they are met by either; impressively competent children diligently applying a combination of youthful yearning for game and competition with the ever enduring archives of chess theory, opening lines and strategy; Likely forcefully applied to their game sense through their throats by parent and coach alike. I would imagine these to be the more numerous competitor in a world where children are introduced to screens closer and closer to the womb. I imagine you may also find young chess clubbers, earnestly trying to best their contemporaries in school. Or more mature, retired, members of these communities now taking away from their spare time to utilize the chess.com app, perhaps on their laptops at lunch or between tasks at work. These folk are probably the most enjoyable to sit and have coffee with if I were to guess. I imagine these woods are where you find the saddest stories never to be told as well, where strong players through injury or age have deteriorated and now contend, possibly in senility, with the future generation of warriors. Offering an interesting opportunity to do battle with a proven opponent and triumph with odds unwittingly in your favor.

I imagine most people are not concerned with the person on the other end of the board. Essentially no more then a name, a thumbnail, and if you're lucky.. a good game.. which is done now.

Maybe if I were less interested in the person and my chance to play with them I could become more interested in the techniques that curve my chance of defeating them. But to me a good game is not necessarily a game won.

Some players were meant to achieve titles, some can only dream, at the end of the day I'm still happy to be a player who really enjoys playing chess, and find comfort in skill coming with experience.

Winning is overrated, but valued by most.

A lengthy post that felt poetically thought out; reminds me of my type of post. You and I are a rare breed and should stick together; most posts are seldom over a few sentences I'd say - and punctuation is an entirely different topic on its own grin.png

p.s. I'd probably be closest described as "a young chess clubber earnestly trying to best their contemporaries at school." However, by now I've already "bested" my last main contemporary that I care about (not from school), yet that doesn't stop me from simply trying to improve at chess and enjoy this game. I also agree that I can have "a good game that is not necessarily won."

I got to 1400 on here because I don't hang pieces as often any more. & one day soon I'm going to stop hanging them completely = 1600.

True that at 1600-ish level, pieces rarely hang. However, the sad truth is that they still "hang" tactically or by positional pressure; this is still true up through 1800-1900ish I'd say. I don't care for the personality of GM Ben Finegold, but his approach (agree with his opinion or not, he is entitled to it) is that every player under 2200 is a "fish" [patzer]. Then there is the famous quotation: "Compared to Kasparov, we are all beginners." Truth is that with games like chess, improvement seems like a constant necessity and the fact remains that playing strength is all relative.

yep that's what I now realize. after you crack not hanging pieces out right you got to work on not hanging them by other means. Like what's going to happen in a few moves time. got to be prepared for everything that could possibly happen.   Easy said than done, BUT

a really good article... excellent I'm playing chess because I enjoy using my brain in something that I never played before... many people say it's a boring game... " You play chess? You're an old man or what? Just old people play that boring game" 😒😒... but I don't care ... and about wins... obviously I always want to win but isn't easy... Every lost game is a won game for me... 'cause after It finish I can see what, where and how were my blunders... Whenever you want I'm here for a game... I'm also a beginner 😊😊

The kids of today that say this game is boring can't even sit still for 2 minutes. It's like the whole world is being infected with adhd. I'm sure the elites are messing all the young kids up on purpose

Everybody starts as a fish or patzer.

Back when I got my first rating, one day I played another patzer...

...we played the game for nearly 7 hours, going into the 3rd time control, sudden death, and we both had less than 5 minutes on the clock when it ended.

I lost that score sheet decades ago, but I bet I would get a big chuckle looking at it now. I did end up winning the game. Not sure if I mated the guy or he resigned.
