Thoughts on using asymmetric time controls to give beginner a better fighting chance

Hey there! I've recently picked up chess again, after playing scholastic tournaments as a kid (20 years ago). I've been enthusiastic about the game again and wanted to get my girlfriend into it so we can play together. She has learned the basics but is usually not comfortable playing me because she thinks the difference in experience won't even make for a fun game.

She is very intelligent and given time she can come up with some very nice ideas and complex moves, to the point that I do find myself quite challenged when we play together. I do want to make it fun for her too, so I thought the following.

Using a chess clock but giving myself way less time than her. For instance, 5/30 or even something like 10/unlimited. One of the cons is of course that I also use her time to think of plays, which doesn't really solve it all, but it does put me into some pressure as I always run the risk of running out of time in a practical sense.

Keep in mind I am also a beginner, ~900, but the fact that I studied chess systematically when younger gives me an edge as I am familiar with some opening lines and tactics, etc.

Has anyone tried something like this? What was your experience with it?

That's a great way to even out the match. Time odds and material odds. Maybe give her an extra piece or two. Giving yourself less time works also.

That is a nice idea too! But I would like for her to develop the game on solid ideas and lines, and I fear less material would change that too much...
