Tournament rating

Hi everyone, this is my first forum

I am wondering what rating should I be before I join my first tournament? I am not aiming to win but just at least have a chance in the first/second round. I am only 650 rated as of now so it might be a while. I am just looking to play the casual weekend fun tournaments.

I started playing in over the board tournaments when I was around your rating. I wouldn't expect to win any games, but it's a really great learning experience. You'll improve a lot faster if you embrace losing to stronger opponents.

My guess is around 1500 rapid is the level where you have a reasonable chance of winning or drawing from time to time, but still will be losing most of the games.

This does not mean you can't take part in tournaments though and with some luck you might even face some other beginner who is brave enough to participate and have an even match.

Depends on size of the tournament too. Some large tournaments will have a bunch of sections. In my area these tournaments will have U1300 and rated section and a U1000 section. You would have to look and see what sections they have though. If they are smaller tournaments they will probably only have two sections which would be an open (so any one can play in it, but would be mostly players rated over 1600 in OTB, and an U1600 section (which you will then need to be around 1400 to 1500 rapid on here to have some chances of occasionally winning games)

It really just depends on the tournament. You shouldn't join a tournament where everyone is rated 2000+ but as long as you can find a tournament with some players around your rating then go for it! Most tournaments will have multiple sections so you can probably fit in one of the lower sections.
