Can anybody please explain me the difference between tactics and plans? When I play first I try not to blunder and after I try to make a plan on how to break the opponents defense eventually leading to attack his king.

A legit question.  I didn't know what they were until I joined this site a year ago.

Dan Heisman offers the following definition:

Tactics -- A forcing set of moves that involves piece safety and checkmating (A defensive tactic prevents these). This includes:
1) En Prise (can take a piece for free)
2) Counting (is each piece safe from potential capturing sequences?)
3) Motifs (pins, double attacks, removal of the guard, etc.)
4) Non-sacrificial combinations of motifs
5 Sacrificial combinations

Most people are familiar with #3: forks, pins, etc.

For beginners once you get past the stage of simply hanging pieces, or not noticing when your opponent is hanging a piece -- tactics are essential study.  Even up to the 2000 rating.  There is no substitute.

Tactics are the optimal move(s) that guarantee a net gain of at least nearly 2 pawns or more (including up to checkmate), no matter how the opponent replies.***

This definition accounts for the criteria used by modern tactical training resources in the digital age.
