i only have a 1000 rating, but i personally love playing the queen's gambit as white. it's almost always accepted, which gives me rapid development and control of the center, and i win that pawn back anyways. it's really the only d4 opening i get to use. i've played against the dutch like, once, and the modern benoni a couple times, but those opponents didn't know the book moves for those openings and i beat them.

for e4, i typically play the ruy lopez, the french advance variation, and a lot of the four knights. i probably have a 75% win rate with the four knights as white, it's not hard when your opponents are 800s-900s.

as black, i play the french most of the time. e5 isn't personally my favorite bc i play e4 e5 all the time. sometimes i play the caro kann or sicilian najdorf if my opponent can get the book moves right.

every now and then i play the polish opening (b4) or larsen's opening (b3) to throw my opponents off guard too.

I play the Ruy Lopez as white and the two knights defense as black, the slav or the semislav against the queen's gambit. I only know the fist couple of moves, just enough to survive the opening and gain a small advantage when my opponent doesn't know his own opening well enough.

I love playing obsolete openings: King's pawn game (1. e4 e5 2. d4...), Scottish game, Hippopotamus defense, Elephant Gambit... I say obsolete and no bad openings ! I mean openings wich were good, or not too bad, but less practiced nowadays. Generally, this is fun to play, even if this is without hope against good player...
