What is a good book to buy for a beginner

It's hard to find a consensus on what chess book to buy for starters. I am not a complete beginner, I open with the fundamentals correct, I know important rules and I can make viable plans for attack. But, my knowledge is basically from experience and self analysis. So I am looking for books that allow me to make my first steps towards advanced stuff like standard openings, tactical play during mid game, etc. Any recommendations?
