Show me some examples of what constitutes a poor defense as well as explaining why these are poor defenses.

Damiano's Defense. Right idea but terrible execution

Any other examples? Damiano's defense is the most well known example other than fools mate and the four move checkmate.

What makes a position too passive?

Avatar of technical_knockout

getting crushed with no counterplay.

Getting crushed sounds subjective, not every good defense needs counter play.

blitzed with no counterplay = too passive.

if you got crushed it wasn't good defense.

By crushed do you mean punished?

Avatar of technical_knockout

no i mean overrun without a chance:

give up the center without a fight & then try to passively hang tight while your opponent launches everything against your king & you'll get CRUSHED.

Prophylaxis is just as important as fighting for the center.
