Nxa8 followed by Qf8# increases your material edge and keeps the opposing king from even attempting to capture anything.  If the white Bishop on g6 was replaced by black Pawns on h7 and h6 then Nxa8 would have been necessary (Nxa8 Bd5, Qf8+ Bg8, Qf6#).
