When you are ‘process-oriented’ and study without the need for immediate gratification of your study efforts in terms of fleeting pleasure, recognition, score, rating, etc., you tend to reap the greatest benefits from your study. Books can guide you into a healthy balance of study and play. Art of Positional Play by Samuel Reshevsky is my recommendation.
The most important thing is to have fun while playing.
If you enjoy games and have fun, you will play more and keep playing.
When you keep playing you will also keep learning
And that is the best and most enjoyable way to improve your chess
Solve some puzzles to improve your chess vision.
Or to spot forced mates/draws
