I don't know... solve tactic puzzles and when there are no tactics in your games focus on mobility. Mobility meaning, for example, a knight in a corner only controls 2 squares. On an edge 4. In the center 8. A rook on a file that's blocked by friendly pawns controls fewer squares. Same for a bishop. Being blocked by an enemy pawn is not so bad if you can pressure that pawn.

That sort of thing.

Play long games and try not to lose any pieces or pawns for free. Try to capture your opponent's pieces or pawns when they're given away for free. Solving tactic puzzles helps with that.

Studying opening is not important at lower level. Your main objective should be to avoid hanging your piece and take free piece whenever you can.

Get used to how piece moves and always check whether the square is safe before moving your piece should be your first step to improve your game. You should learn simple checkmate and tactic as well.

Use the Bailout Strategy:

1. learn openings which let you swap lots of pieces, and get straight to the endgame. - no middlegame. (swapping queens especially)

2. study these openings and endgames real serious. pawns endgames, and rooks+pawns endgames. - they're the most common.

just kidding, I don't know. my middlegame Still sucks, but less (my opponents' middlegame is ever worse. who IS good at that? - it's too hard).
