What’s the number next to the piece count?

When you capture a piece, it goes the the little sideline, and there’s a number like +4 with it. What does the number mean?

Material difference.

The difference in material. For example:
White's captured pieces: Pawn x3, Queen
Black's captured pieces: Pawn x2, Rook, Knight, Bishop x2 +4
The material Black has captured is four points greater than what White has captured. Assuming the position has little to no complications, Black should be able to win very easily.
