Hey all,

very new to chess and was wondering if anyone could explain to me why this would be a draw?

 Thank you!

This is stalemate - the White king is not in check and White does not have any legal moves.  Therefore, it is a draw.

yes stale mate like stale bread.

Yep, in a game that black should have easily easily easily won....... They messed up and caused the stalemate instead of a checkmate. When you get in that kind of situation that's not winnable, your goal is to try and draw instead of losing. Sometimes you can cause a draw against a careless player.... Here black did it to themselves

Once you do that to yourself a couple of times in hard fought games that you finally won...... You start paying more attention to it 🙂

Because This is Stalemate

The black king is not in check. It is black's move. Black cannot make a legal move. The only two alternatives are: 1) wait until the sun goes nova and wipes out the game, or 2) call it either a win for white or a draw. Whoever created the stalemate rule decided that in situations like this the "winning" player hadn't thought things out well enough to be rewarded with a win, so the game is considered a draw.

You must ask two questions:

  1. Can the king make a legal move? (Legal as in can it find a square that isn't threatening it?)
  2. Is it safe in the square it occupies?

If 'No' to 1 and 'Yes' to 2, it is a stalemate. That is a draw.

When you have overwhelming pieces (and only their king can move) and you are about to promote, under-promoting to a rook (or something else) almost 100% avoids stalemate (but I guess not all the time).   I have gotten stalemates in that situation (promoting to a queen) a bunch of times!!

Or, once you get used to this scenario, you will find a "waiting move" or a check and then you might be able to promote to a queen.

Stalemate with white to move.

White to move NOT stalemate the side to move musthave no legalmove and not be in check.
