Why is this a draw instead of checkmate?

I’m new to the game. I can’t wrap my head around checkmate. I can check, but the computer often tells me
my next move ends the game in a draw. For example, I had my King on g3 and my Queen on g8. My opponent only had his king left...on h6. I moved my king to h4 and had his king in check. Shouldn’t his only moves available allow me to checkmate him? Instead the game ended in a draw. Why?

Sounds like you may have stalemate him maybe, without seeing the game it's a guess.

I'd like to know which move you had in mind. If you were black, what move would you make in that position?

No, you had not. But you think you had, so I think you should focus on what is check and what is not.

Two kings opposing each other is no check.
