blunder turns gold

. . .you see, I was playing this blitz game and Black made a 7th move that I'd ever encountered and it threw me off balance -

I wasn't sure how to proceed, but it was a 5/0 game with not a lot of time for thinking.  I did ok until I tried to get cute (not that I'm not cute!) on my 11th move - which turned out to be a blunder -

Black simply played ...Bh2+ and won the exchange.
But after some maneuvering Black made some positional mistakes that allowed me to win.

it actually took me 5 minutes to realize that the bishops in these pieces were actually bishops though and not knights... when you said Bxh2+ i was just confused...

Avatar of gretagarbo

yeah, I thought the piece on f4 was a knight also. then it would have been 11.. Ne2+ 12 Kh1 Qxf1#.

Those bishop icons are confusing to me.

This is my favorite of the new chess sets availble here.  Even though the Bishops are in the shape of a Knight's helmet, I don't really confuse with the horse's heads, but I can see how it might happen.

ewwww.... Muzio's.....  JK, its a perfectly legitimate opening.  I never get it to work- It requires a tactical mind, something I do not possess.

The board is a nice color, but those bishops gotta go.  Supposed to be mitres not helmets.

I like to play with Staunton pieces, but for demonstration, I like quaint-looking pieces.

paul211, this opening is called the Muzio and is quite sound if somewhat drawish with best play.

The proffered pawn and Knight are well compensated for. There is also a double Muzio in which (generally) the Bishop is also sacked -  - but this is considered less sound though still quite potent against most players.

I would never have traded Queens on move 7. Then I'd simply lose, being down in material with my attack potential dissipated.

Often the Muzio is played in Blitz, but it's very sound in normal games, though it's tactical nature and lack of any real advantage for white makes it unpopular in tournament play.

I commiserate with your difficulties, as I'm sure Erik does also (though I realize I shouldn't speak for him).

Thanks for your detailed response.
