Chess and Music!

Now you may not normally listen to music when playing chess, especially in a tournament. But what about casually? Especially online, since foobar for me is my second most used program on my computer next to mIRC. So whether I'm browsing this or other sites, doing the daily puzzle or checking my email, I usually have music playing. A lot of the times I like listening to certain bands at certain times.

So my question is, what do you think is, or would be your chess music? Your battle music if you will. This may even somehow show what kind of player you are. Say you listen to Death Metal while playing, MAYBE (I'm not a socioligist, psychiatrist, or any kind of profession that would KNOW this for sure) you play more aggressively.

So, post your chess music, and your chess "style" and let's see what you get.

Me personally, I find myself listening to to a lot of "Progressive Metal" while playing. For those not sure what that is, some examples would be Dream Theater and Sonata Arctica. Now for my "style" if you will. I know when I first started chess I favored fast attacks, which honestly is probably why I'm not a great player. I'm working on it though. :p

We where just talking about this in our music lovers group. I listen to music sometimes when I play. I don't really have a favorite music when I play, so I don't know. But this is an interesting question. I would like to hear what others have to say...

reading Kasparovs ''life imitates chess'' he talks about how emotions should not effect you when playing chess. For example, if the board requires you to defend, you must defend, you cannot play your emotions and play aggressive if the board on your behalf should be played defensivly.

so fast music and fast attacks wont always lead to good chess or even the correct moves (or moves that would be candidate moves if you hadnt listened to your emotions), although could be fun, thats just my opinion.

i listen and play sometimes, it depends if im playing friendly games or long games etc etc

p.s. dream theater... i couldnt listen to them even if i wasnt playing chess! Tongue out

i listen music almost every time i play chess, or i'm training (at home), not tournament.  I don't know but now, when i play a tournament or at the chess club i can ignore the sorrounding sounds.

I don't think anyone listens to music at a tournament. :P I'd think that would be pretty rude.

Fast attacks are terrible against a player who knows what they are doing, but it does work well against those who are new to the game. Like I said, I'm working on it. :p

I like Dream Theater, but now I'm listen to a lot of Aquabats. :p Progressive Metal to Ska. Ha.

(oh, But I believe it doesn't affect my style in chess, sometimes aggressive, sometimes passive. Maybe it does effect me subconciously, I have no way to check that, now have I?)

I know a guy who listens to music during his tournament games.  He usually asks the opponent.

I play out most of my life with a soundtrack. OTB chess is an exception, because I am very much of the opinion it would be rude, but online chess is never mute for me. Even as I write this I am listening to Avril; it just makes the whole chess.com experience complete I think.

I've read (can't remember where, of course!) that 20 minutes of Mozart would improve your chess play.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Infected Mushroom, Nine Inch Nails, and Incubus.  I almost always have an assorted electric/industrial playlist on.

My usual style is to try to get ahead by a slight margin (a pawn, generally) and slow-roll ride it to victory.
