Please scroll down to the bottom of the thread for the most current trivia question .........

I just started this thread where I will ask chess trivia questions and you guys get to answer them.   Please only submit one answer per question, so that everyone gets a chance to play.   No cheating either (do not Google the answers or look them up in books).   Ok, here's the first question .....

Who is the only chess player who has beaten Mikhail Botvinnik, Mikhail Tal, Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen at least once in chess?

Well I'm definitely not good at these!!! How about.. S. Karjakin?  He's probably too young to have played some of those ..

Hi Jay.   Nope, it's not Sergey Karjakin.   Yeah, he's too young to have played against Fischer.

I'll go with Judit Polgar, I'm not 100% sure but I think she's at least a good guess.

Nope, not Judith Polgar either.   Good guess though, Cee Willy.   It's weird that both answers came from people on my friends list.   I wonder if I posted it right.

Jeff, I think you posted it right cause I can see it but I won't get it right, I don't think this guy ever played Carlson, Boris Spassky ?

No, it's not Boris Spassky.   This GM has beaten Boris Spassky though.   I didn't mention all of the top players he has beaten ... just the ones that I feel are on the top 10 of all-time list.

Do "Gary Kasparov" and "Magnus Carlson" even exist...?

Did I spell their names wrong?   Ok, I'll fix it.   Sorry.

Awonder Liang?

Yes, that is correct.   I guess it wasn't as hard as I thought.

Youngest player to defeat a grandmaster

On July 28, 2012, Awonder Liang, aged 9 years, 3 months, and 20 days, beat Grandmaster Larry Kaufman in the Washington International tournament.

Question #3 .... Name at least 4 of the 6 players on the strongest chess team in history (Hint: this team played at the 13th Chess Olympiad in 1958 and four of them were World Champions).

jay_1944

@yujieli   did you actually know that without looking it up?? I'd be very impressed haha

yujieli

Just recalled it from when I read about him on Wikipedia

Good job.  Here's another interesting tidbit.  On August 5, 2011, at the age of 8 years 118 days, Awonder also became the youngest player to defeat an international master in a standard tournament game. This occurred in round 6 at the U.S. Open in Orlando, Florida, when Liang defeated IM Daniel Fernandez (rated FIDE 2401 and USCF 2448 at that time).

I find this very interesting, because Daniel Fernandez kicked my butt in a tournament that was also held in Orlando, Florida, back in the 1990's, when he was also 8 years old.   To this day, Daniel is the youngest player to have ever beaten me.  What a weird coincidence.
