In story mode, the bots range from 900 to 1500 Elo, depending on the challenge. Some boss levels reach Stockfish's maximum level, but only when you start from a winning position. So, I believe beginners have a chance, especially since there are hints available through the star system.
There is also a bot mode with opponents ranging from 600 to 2000 Elo
