I've had a visitor in a chess club use an iPhone under the table. Sigh.
If I knew someone and believed they cheated online I'd decline to play them. Something like, "Online you're too strong for me, so I'll pass, thanks." Polite, non accusatory and if they really want to play tell them you enjoy the social aspects of playing over the board.
Hello chess world.
To me chess is just a fun game, which use to be my main hobby.
But I can hardly play chess outside the internet, and playing chess on the internet is not always enjoyable.
I have a OTB rating of about 1700, but I live in a country where we can hardly play any chess OTB.
So I turn to the internet, where people start caring about something I call a fake chess rating.
There are 2 types of time controls in internet chess, Correspondence and blitz/bullet
95% of chess players online will not play a standard game of chess unless they are trying to obtain a fake rating. Correspondence can be fun, until you hit people trying to obtain a fake rating. The other day I got to play someone on the internet, I knew IRL. IRL I smashed him at chess with ease, online he doesn't come close to making a mistake and also shows off while beating me, ah how could you fall for my 10 move combination, you suck. You know this made me more then angry, but I don't want to start a fight with someone over this, cause ever single time I played someone I knew IRL at chess over the internet, they cheated.
The chess online community doesn't feel like some welcoming community where people discuss and learn chess. No, it feels like a group of people taking advantage of other people.
Which is different from chess Over The Board.
