Kasparov's Motto
Exactly. Just like Josh Waitzkin is told in the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer that he needs to hate his opponents, to despise them. It's not personal, it's part of the competitive spirit. If you are smiling and joking with your opponent, then you won't go for the "kill". Afterwards, you can have a laugh and buy each other a drink, but at the board, you MUST have the heart of a warrior. And for a warrior, to do battle is to live.
" Chess is life"...RJF
.."then maybe yure not playing it right "
;-)
Oh! I'm sure I'm not playing the game to kasparov's level of expertise, but on the other hand I'm equally sure that I have the wherewithal to recognise a board game when I see one!
p.s. "Some people think football is a matter of life and death...I can assure them it is much more serious than that."
-Bill Shankley, 'The Sunday Times' (London), October 4, 1981
p.p.s I didn't believe Shankley either!
"If you think it's just a game, than you're not playing it right!"
Of course, because one could consider that "playing it right" means being able to play professionally and so it also becomes a job, not just a game. But for those of us who don't play it right and therefore cannot earn our life with chess, well it's just a game.
Here is an interesting article about Garry Kasparov's motto for life and chess:

"Attack and don't relent". This seems like a reasonable statement for life and chess and it has surely helped Garry Kasparov become the success that he is.
