Would anyone truly expect something different?
Magnus Carlsen is kind of a dick, vice article.
Great player, perhaps to be the greatest of all-time. But, the guy reads Donald Duck comics in his spare time. Not sure what you're expecting to get out of the guy if you're not asking him how to play a specific chess position.
I related mostly to the guy saying
"I started playing chess four years ago when my internet went down and it was the only thing left to do on my laptop. It grew into an obsession that blossomed into an addiction—"
Kind of like my position. An ex bought me a miniature hand made wooden chess set from India six years ago. It sparked something in me though I'm definitely not as devout as this guy, I'm getting there though after recently joining Chess.com after wasting 6 years on that dreadful yahoo chess!
magnus was not polite but the interviewer did not seemed prepared with questions that magnus had not already answered or could answer meaningfully. it's well known that magnus is easily bored.
When you have reached fame, it is expected that you will be asked the same questions over and over again. The singer, Phillip Phillips has probably had more than twice the amount of interviews than Carlsen, yet he is able to engage and keep his smile for everyone that has interviewed him.
I guess the interviewer was just disappointed that Magnus wasn't that impressed by his chess skills...
Wow... 3 years ago you could say "dick" on the forums and not get censored? How times have changed!
And not one person accused the OP of being a troll. Times have changed.
Honestly, I can see why Magnus would get upset. There are so many misconceptions about chess in the media, so when a chess player is interviewed by a non-chess player they're almost always asked the same placid, unthoughtful questions. Why are there so many misconceptions? Although chess is a sport like any other game, it has quite a large learning curve which makes it unappealing for most people to seek to understand it -- but that is just the problem there. The person interviewing Magnus in this article has not sought to understand chess to an extent of being able to produce thought provoking questions pertaining to the game. That's sort of like a weather channel lady who has never touched a basketball interviewing Kevin Durant after a game. If I were Magnus, I would boycott all interviews from non-chess related media outlets until they have proven they know what the H.E.-double-hockey-sticks they're talking about.
Anybody else happen to see this? Gave me a slight chuckle.
