Welcome to the best game ever, Michelle! You can start from here:

http://www.chess.com/learn-how-to-play-chess.html

This will give the very basic rules. However, as an elementary introduction to strategy, I strongly recommend the free e-book that IM David Pruess and IM Rench (both are from chess.com staff) have recently published. Please don't get me wrong, it directed towards children who start the game, but I find it very valuable for all starters, regardles of age, here's the book:

Hi and welcome, wycckedkitty.

The best way to learn the game is to play! Feel free to send me a challenge if you want to practice (unrated is fine if you want) and discuss.

Chess is a game where you can learn the rules in minutes, but spend a lifetime to master! You received some great links above.

Chess.com requires each new member(that I'm aware of) to answer a few questions before you get started playing and improving on "the best game ever"! Smile

Have you ever seen any UFOs? Have you been abducted by what you believe to be aliens? Have you had any missing time experience?

Only when the drugs work right, honey.

If UFOs were just a drug related hallucination, I would be very happy, almost everydayWink

On the topic of aliens, if you're a woman, have you been abducted by pdela?

If I was, it would be a lot like "Tie me up, tie me down", without the "romance".Laughing

Fayetteville!? My sister went to school in Fayettevile! Darn Razorbacks and their hog calling at all the games! >:P

hmm...and I did use to teach some in my younger days, so yeah, I'd be happy to volunteer to teach you some basics in a real game if you'd like (since it is easier to learn from hands on experience than it is to learn from a book!)...we could even make it a take-back game so that it could be more instructive :D

Michelle,

Admirable, I think, to be willing to take an interest in hubbie's hobby. There are tons of places to go to learn the game as a beginner...the decision I think you face is whether you'd prefer learning from a book or from software. I've heard that "Chess" from the "Dummies" book series is good, but there are a lot of other choices. Whatever you pick, after you learn the rules, the biggest challenge will be learning some very basic fundamentals (develop pieces and center pawns early, castle early, piece value), and then focus on tactics. Yasser Seirawan has a good beginners book called "Play Winning Chess", and I like Lev Alburts Comprehensive Chess Course because it teaches a lot more than just the rules.

If you don't know all the rules yet (or barely remember them) read

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess excellent beginners book; next try one of the following

Common Sense in Chess by Dr Lasker

Chess Fundamentals, My Chess Career and Last Lectures by J R Capablanca

Books by reputable masters (who are still with us) such as Lev Alburt, Yasser Seirawan, Jeremy SIlman and Bruce Pandolfini for beginners are also recommended
