Funny you should say that, I lose many to most games to exactly this. The pieces just disappear, and I have no working visual memory for the same reason... (trying to fix it a little is why i joined this site... it's been 0.0% effective O_o)
I've heard about player comming to the game apparently drunk, only to suddenly sober up when his opponent falls into a trap and "wins" a piece. My favorite trap, however, is this one: how do you win oposite coloured bishops ending(in a blitz game)? Answer: put your bishop (or King) near the clock amd make shortest possible moves.
