idk but that sounds BA, check wikipedia
White pawn promoted into black piece???
It was an old tournament game (before the present rules ~1840 ) the white player did it intentionally and the referee had to discuss a lot to finally consider that move valid.
um.. Black can't checkmate its own pieces..
so obviously something is wrong here.
No, it was a discovered check. I know the game you are talking about, but I can't find it.

what is the point though? promoting white knight wouldnt have harmed the discovered check and mate folloiwng..

yes it would have. Then the black king could have taken the knight to get out of check (or some scenario like that.)
That's cheating.
It wasn't at the time it was played. The rules then said that a pawn that reaches the eighth rank may be promoted to ANY piece of the player's choosing.

UGH, stop replying with smart answers! :P
and yes i agree with rich.. hes cheating! hes using an engine!! :)
you're right again, if the white promoted any "white piece" the king or any other black piece would capture it
Pawn promotion rule has had a lot of changes, specially before 1800, Philidor made some references about this... that's why that kind of moves were allowed
Nonot buying that. If that was ever allowed Ouachita should be let back in.
Considering you're always wrong about everything else, why should anyone care whether you believe it or not?

I believe "Owned" is appropriate here.
Anyway, I don't remember this position as a game, rather a puzzle composition. (Much like the puzzle where you have to castle along a file, also from the past.) What has been said is correct, if the pawn was promoted to a white piece the enemy would have escaped checkmate via capture. The new black knight blocked his own king's escape square.

You've been wrong numerous times before as well.
Everyone has been wrong numerous times. However, the only correct thing I've seen you type is "I like the Trompowsky". Everything else, utter crap.
If this is true why wouldnt you promote to another King and make the opponent checkmate both of them, or promote to the opponents king and checkmate that one.
And between all the mudslinging, this guy finds a possible anwer. Well done, it seems to work.

And you don't talk crap too, of course you do ?! I have studied the Trompowsky Attack very carefully it's my favorite move, I've took notice of Octavio Trompowsky's games hope I spelt that correctly, where he uses it he's also my favorite chess player.
Care to point any of it out punk?
Hi everyone, I hope you can help me
I'm looking for an old real game (18th or 19th century) which a white pawn is promoted into a black knight (I don't exactly remember... but it was a black piece) in order to checkmate the black.
Thank you.
