Why the computers rise against us...

So if we eschew history and focus on the movies... in both The Matrix and Terminator, the computers decide that human kind is superfluous and must be exterminated. Right?

Could it be because the computers kick our human asses at chess so effortlessly?

Any Laptop can beat the best chess players in world....

You're right. Machine learning is helping computers to think on their own at an alarmingly fast rate. Google's DeepMind is already working on replacing humans in fields like medicine, consultancy etc.

The day the machines take over the humans might not be very far after all.

It took decades to build programs and computers capable to do that, despite its huge calculating power, and it has been achieved by humans.

Eventually, a machine which is truly intelligent will learn to increase that intelligence and come to the logical conclusion that we are its most dangerous threat ...and the environment...ourselves...etc.

When computers can repair, design, and build themselves from scratch then you can start to worry about such scenarios. So far they can't even flush a toilet at the proper time, and they certainly aren't ready to drive a car safely.

To say the least that's the worst correlation I've ever heard.

We are essentially much more advanced than any computer but because of how advanced we end up being imperfect.

Actually ignore my post, it's irrelevant

Yes, machines will beat humans in everything. Including flushing the toilet at the right time :p

The question is only when, and what areas are the last where humans can outperform computers.

The idea that the computers "want" to exterminate us is strange. The machines will "want" to do what we tell them to. Like: Humans are gods and should be worshipped. The machines will not have any sense of self preservation or self-interest, unless we put it there.

The "Terminators" we might see are likely not rouge robots, but killer machines controlled by nation states. Soldiers who will not question orders, have no empathy, nor speak with the press. The prospect of those scare me more than, say, nuclear weapons.

Armed conflict is already going this way. Drone pilots sit in bunkers thousands of miles away from the targets they are bombing. Is it the same thing to kill a person this way as it is to stab them through the chest with a bayonet? I suspect it does not bring the same level of reflection. The suffering of war, the impact on innocent civilians etc is all far away. Killing becomes easier. A 9-5 shift.

Strangemove, yes, but so far it is still human controlled.

The really scary part becomes when the decision making (initially on the battlefield, but later also higher level strategic decisions) in warfare is done by machines. No accountability, and the possibility to completely erase/falsify any recordings of what really happened.

Maybe the good part of that is that wars are fought between robots, and there is no need to kill (m)any humans.

I've already  heard about robots with pieces of human brain inside them. Don't want to think how will that end....
