14 move resignation....yet another reason why YOU DONT OPEN UP THE KING SIDE!!!!

Hello again.  I am showcasing another game, this time as a more experienced player.  I am not where I want to be yet but I am chugging along with improvements every month.  I am confident I will hit 1600 by this summer.

See my first post here.....

http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-showcase/first-post--11-move-resignation-my-most-dominate-performance---take-a-look

I play people within 100 points of me exclusively and as time goes on, I cannot figure out why people at my level open up their kingside?!  I think that opening is a little beyond their skill because everytime an opponent does this, it leads to my devestating victory.  For those of you out there who have no idea what im talking about just click through the first three moves of this game.  It seems elementary but A LOT of people fall for this little trap once they open up their king side.

Hope you enjoy : )

If white plays 4. G3 white loses his rook to 4. ...Qxe4+

Obviously the f4-pawn thrust should never be made this early in the game. Your opponent, if he was any good, must have been brain-dead or something during this match.

Also, 12.Bxd7+? where does this come from? There is no need to sacrifice the Bishop, and it gives White no attacking chances. Indeed, it negates them.

Horrible little trap to fall into.

The real mistake here was 3.fxe5, not 2.f4, which is called the Grand Prix Attack of the Sicilian defense.  While considered weak, at the club level it is perfectly playable if you know the theory.  In fact, I've been considering picking it up as an Anti-Sicilian, since I don't expect too many people at my level to know the correct play against it.  2. ... d5 is the best continuation for Black.

After 2. ... e5, I would just go 3.Nf3 and enter into King's Gambit lines, where the ... c5 thrust is more than a little odd.  Then again, I'm a huge KG fan, so this would be another reason to adopt the Grand Prix Attack.

omnipaul beat me to it. Pawn to f4 actually is a pretty cool move for white in the opening for a lot e4 lines. Mikhail Tal called it one of his favorite squares.

His queen was pinned by Bb7, he sacrificed the bishop to just delay the enevitable queen snatching.

I actually get a kick out of this :P.  As a 1. e4 c5 2. f4 (Grand-Prix Sicilian) player myself, I can say for a certainty that 2. ... e5 is way inferior to a few other lines.

Anyways, don't talk down about your opponents (especially considering the ratings).  I assure you there are many times when an 'opened' kingside won the game... I've played many myself :).

Edit: I may also point out that 2. f4 is starting to make a comeback in professional chess, being that 'Tals Refutation' isn't as foolproof as once thought (for those interested the 'refutation' is 2. ... d5 3. exd5 e6!).  Interesting is that after 2. ... d5 white can try 3. Nf3!? with amazing tactical potential (and if white is prepared he's likely to win before leaving his 'book').

IMO, it's poor form to use a player's real handle when you're making a post that's going to make fun of his or her play.  We all have games that we're not proud of, and you would probably not appreciate having yours held up for public ridicule either.

Strangely enough, though, I've also played a game against this same person where he did something similar, by starting with the unusual 1.e4 f5?!, and lost even quicker.  That's how we learn, I suppose.

Errg . This topic makes me angry. Like Fxe5 was bad. but i mean dont talk like u know everything lol geeze.

Avatar of howlieboy69

I didnt mean to ridicule at all.  Im sorry to anyone i offended. It was more to showcase my win than magnify his loss.

I see a few proponents of a kingside opening...as i said, only do it if you can handle it...players above 1800 will have no problem but anything below 1600, beware.  I dont open kingside because i cant weather the storm against an aggressive oppenent when i open that way.

Whats the correct play against e4 c5 f4 e5!!. I'm considering trying it.

I disagree. f4 helps battle for the center. Sure, it opens the h4-e1 diagonal, but that can be protected by Nf3. f4 is played early in many playable lines including the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4) and Bird's Opening (1.f4). Of course, some care's required.

3.fxe5?? - Horrible. It means White didn't consider 3...Qh5+. One should always consider his opponent's CHECKS and CAPTURES.

ASpieboy> 4. ...Ke2??????? Are you serious?

4.g3 Qxe4+ and Black also wins a rook.

OMGdidIrealyjustsact> Whats the correct play against e4 c5 f4 e5!!.

2...e5?! doesn't merit a !!. White's on the attack, not the defense. either 3.Nf3 or 3.Bc4 should be fine, transposing to a King's Gambit where Black's ...c5 looks odd. Actually, I think White has to be at least a little better here.

Autually the Tal's Gambit is 1.e4 c5 f4 d5 3.pxp Nf6 4.c4 e6, or (bb5ch etc before playing c4). Guess you knew that but left a move out by mistake. Didn't think it was ever thought to be a refutation as such, but just led to positions where white was defending, and not to 2.f4 players taste.

Your post wasn't too far out of line, howlieboy.  But FWIW, GoAdelaideUnited's rating has improved since that game, and is currently higher than everyone in this thread who made fun of him.

How do you like them apples?
