Well, after the queen trade, on move 8, there was Nxc7, forking the king and winning the rook exchange on a8. I would have played that - but I'm only rated 1100 - 1200, so perhaps it wasn't a smart move. But in general, it's a good thing to trade a knight for a rook, no?

That is in fact the only good move in the position.

This was a snap rematch from a game where my very talented opponent was losing on time, and I backstabbed them with a checkmate in their final few seconds, just because it seemed funny. Little did I suspect what my opponent would find amusing in their righteous revenge...
As you've spotted, the technical losing move here was not following through on that King-Rook fork. I left it as a looming threat two moves too long, entirely due to my true folly: Queen Out Early. Waving the Queen around like that almost never works out well, and upon inevitable exchange, my eyes went down to undeveloped pieces instead of up to that poised knight...
