My first real combination!

Earlier today I played a game where I managed to force a winning of the exchange for myself end ended up with a rook for a bishop in what I think was a favourable position. I am posting this game for two reasons, the first being to show off my first real combination (in my mind) which was not a forced mate and simply won material. And the second is for somebody to review my opening and explain to me what I could have done differently since I rarely face the Petrov Defense in my games.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks :D

As for Re8, when would he play this? His bishop occupies that square.

Kupov

Oh yes I see that, however his move was much simpler and prevented Knf7 a bit easier. I would have been very surprised to see re8.

Yes that move was better, but looks worse when you are not aware of the dangers. Someone at your rating would likely identify an attack like that everytime.

Nice game, comrade.

Have you been to Banff in Scotland?

His move 14... Be8 does not drop the exchange. 15... Kb8 was the real blunder.

After your follow up 15. Bh3+ black can simply play 15...Bd7 where if 16. Bxd7 Rxd7 and if 16. Nf7 Bxh3 17. Nxh8 Be6 (not the tempting 17... Bd6 18. Qh5 Be6 19. Ng6 hxg6 20. Qxg6 where White has an extra pawn) The knight is trapped in the corner, will be collected shortly, and Black is up 2 pieces for a rook.

Also, even after 15...Kb8 it looks like black can limit his loss to one point of material after 15...Kb8 16. Ne6 Rd6 17. Bf4 Rxe6 18. Bxe6 Nxd4 19. Rxd4 Qxe6 where black has gained a center pawn and the bishop pair for the lost exchange. Even so, this line still looks great for White since Black is lagging in development.
