Sicilian, Kalashnikov

The AK-47 rifle is known as the Kalashnikov, named after Mikhail Kalashnikov.  90 million Kalashnikov rifles have been sold throughout the world.

The variation 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5 5.Nb5 d6 is known as the Kalashnikov variation of the Sicilian, named after Viacheslav Kalashnikov (1883-1970).  It has been played thousands of times throughout the world.

There is not much known about V. Kalashnikov, or at least I cannot find very much about him.  I see no games of this variation played by V. Kalashnikov, and can only find a handful of chess games played by him.  But his name has been attached to this opening and it seems to be an OK variation of the Sicilian.  I have played it 9 times with good success.

Here is a game I played where my opponent tried to gun me down with a Kalashnikov, but got mated instead.

I appreciate when higher rated players allow the mate all the way through, especially if it is pretty. Nothing worse than when someone thinks for a minute and then resigns after you sac your queen! Especially if it's some kind of Ftacnik-Cvitan-esque brilliancy that you got lucky enough to both have AND see.

There was that game where Fischer got upset that R. Byrne resigned before the fireworks.
