(Another) Stuck! Please Help

I have been stuck for forever now (2 years)… I hit 1500 local rating and I haven’t gone up. I don’t know why I am not improving though, because I am doing my puzzles and stuff. Recently I have not liked chess as much as before, and I am afraid I will drop it altogether. I need to stick with it; I have to be doing something with my life. For all you chess players who plateaued and triumphed, please help me! Thanks :3

Get a little perspective. At least you've managed to get that far in the fricking first place. For most people, there are no plateaus, only ceilings, and they are way lower than that.

True, but I shouldn’t stop just because I hit a wall. Others shouldn’t either. Workin through these moments builds a lot of commitment and perseverance. I just don’t know how to break through…

"I don’t know why I am not improving though" ++ Analyse your lost games.

"I am doing my puzzles" ++ Tactics puzzles are a good warm-up, but in a real game nobody tells you there is a tactic, or for which side

"I have to be doing something with my life."
++ Chess is a hobby, something that adds to your life, it is not the meaning of your life.

I think it's tough, we all want that higher rating, but how versatile are you? Instead of trying specifically for a higher rating, id recommend picking specific skills and openings you want to improve at so that you are more well rounded. For example, you could learn as much as you can about playing 1. c4 or f4 for example and it would take your chess into positions you may never have seen.

If you like puzzles, I dont recommend just doing a bunch of random chess.com puzzles, there are great apps through chess king that blend learning with tactic specific puzzles.

And if you are worried about perseverance,  I hear you, but its totally fine to take breaks and return to the game, even healthy for your brain.

Just make sure to find a skill or opening you are excited to learn about, if you don't find any fun in it, then take that break but I think you probably love the game right?

Anyways, I wish you luck, try not to stress about it, your rating doesn't really do a good job of showcasing your chess skill, and I've sat across from you, you've definitely got some skill :^).

Take care,

Eric

Playing is more helpful than puzzles. Apart from that learn one opening thoroughly with White and one opening thoroughly with Black. If you are struggling against the clock use a longer time control.

@tygxc I just meant by doing something with my life is that I don’t enjoy anything else as much as chess, and I wouldn’t want to. So I guess I need to keep working at it because I need to do something.

When I was in elementary school I plateaued at 800-900 USCF for three years. I watched all my friends, who used to be obviously weaker than me, become slightly weaker, to equal, to stronger than me. I quit chess in middle school- I didn't like playing the game anymore. But when I came back to chess in high school, I really enjoyed the game. I'm now 2080 USCF.

It's difficult to improve if you don't enjoy it. There isn't anything wrong with just dropping chess for a while. Even now, I occasionally get these bouts where I don't feel like playing chess anymore, so I don't. I would sit in front of my computer and ask myself, would I get enjoyment from clicking "play"? And although I really wanted to play, if the answer was no, then I would force myself to log out. If you don't feel like doing something, then don't do it (within reason).
