I'm a firm believer in never believing a word anyone says. This does not feel like the time to suddenly abandon that belief.

Look, if this kid has honestly not played more than a handful of games before three weeks ago, never read a book or been coached in any way, then in my personal stupid opinion he is a talent. For sure, that's a lot of raw talent right there. I've glanced at some of his games. They're very good. His openings vary and he isn't using an engine. The one he lost wasn't even bad. His opponent played well.

However, I don't believe you, so...

Yea, someone doesn't just magically get to that level. 

He must’ve had some past experience. There is no way he is just starting and is 1800. Magnus Carlsen hung pieces when he started and look at him now!

He casually beat “super grand master” AI the other night as well👍🏻🙂

I’m sorry you don’t believe me but, frankly I can hardly believe it myself. I’ve tried to raise him in an intellectually rich environment from the get go and he’s been a sponge for information on a variety of topics. He’s different alright. Hope you follow his progress and change your mind.🙂

We’ve played maybe 2 or 3 dozen games in the last couple years and the last time we played was in December while I was at work. He beat me handily but I dismissed it as my being preoccupied.

That's not what I'd call playing for about three weeks. I'm thirty and I've played fewer than a dozen games of chess with family members in my entire life. I probably haven't played that many more than three dozen over the board games of any kind in my life.

If he's truly a beginner, even if it's not as much of one as you previously said, you should probably get him a coach.

When I stated how long he’d been playing I was referring to the latest iteration of interest. His previous engagement with chess was quite casual and lacked any hint of this seemingly new and decent potential. Did NOT see this coming at ALL!

I saw this when I viewed his games. I'm no expert, but if he's legitimately a beginner, get him a coach. I'm sure it'll turn out to be a good decision

Thanks for all your comments and input. I am only trying to get an honest opinion of his ability and wouldn’t exaggerate his past experience to inflate his perceived natural skill set. He is what he is and as I described. I’ll gauge his interest and see what he wants to do vis a vis a coach or some other form of formal learning but for now he’s just enjoying playing. It’s spring break here and he said he wants to “grind” on chess.com this weekend. Maybe have a gander at his latest games and drop a comment.

you're saying he beat the 2900 rated Computer? That's higher than Magnus Carlsen, i dont think you would be able to beat Magnus Carlsen if you just started playing chess three weeks ago lol

Dababy I’m sorry you don’t think that’s possible. As I’ve already stated he didn’t START chess 3 weeks ago but didn’t delve into it in any way beyond a couple dozen games with me. Until 3 weeks ago....

I don’t believe the computer 2900 would be as fierce as an equally rated human but I’m only guessing

no its not but it still beats most chess professionals easily
